May 25, 2011 - Rotary club's weekly meeting

  • ICCTC System - Sierra LeoneOur guest speaker Dr. Gail B. Kettlewell from George Mason University educated us on the Sierra Leone International Community College Town Center System. She is the designer and director of the Development for ICCTC System-Sierra Leone.

May 24, 2011 - Battlefield High School Senior Awards Night

  • George Layne from the Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary Club presented the Dawn Marie Wilbourn Memorial Scholarship to Peri Lowell, a senior at the Battlefield High School in Haymarket, Virginia. Ed Wilbourn, a Rotarian from the Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary Club established this annual memorial scholarship in honor of his daughter Dawn. The student selection is based on academic merit, excellence, and potential. This year Peri Lowell was chosen as the recipient of this scholarship. According to School Counselor Tiffany Kaufman who provided a letter of recommendation for Peri Powell, "Peri has a maturity and insight that is well beyond her high school years." Congratulations to Peri.




May 20, 2011 - PACE West PROWL Pantry

  • Dominion Woman's ClubOur Club Vice President Lori Power and Martha Feeney from the Dominion Woman's Club gave out prizes from the PROWL Pantry located in the PACE West school's cafeteria to students who have earned points based on favorable behavior and academic performance. Each Friday when school is in session a member from our Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary Club and a member from the Dominion Woman’s Club would be there during lunch to service the PROWL Pantry. On occasion members from other local clubs would come out to provide assistance. The Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary club is a proud member of the PACE's Village which comprises of the local businesses and non-profit organizations to provide support to the PACE West school. In September of 2010 the Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary club donated $1,500 to the PACE West's Prepared, Responsible, Open-Minded and Willing to Learn (PROWL) program.






May 18, 2011 - Rotary club's weekly meeting

  • Club member Laurie MacNaughton received the Rotarian of the Month Certificate from Club President Alan Myers.
  • Club member George Layne gave an inspirational presentation on the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and the Congressional Award. He also introduced our guests Matthew Bess, Principal Mrs. Amy Ethridge-Conti, and Natalie High. Matthew Bess, a Battlefield High School student, is one of the 252 young American recipients of the 2010 Congressional Award Gold Metal. Mrs. Amy Ethridge-Conti is the current Principal of the Battlefield High School where Matthew attends school. Natalie High, a highly technical person and a volunteer, helped George put together the presentation. Thank you, Natalie.

Founded in 1956 in the UK by Her Majesty The Queen's husband, HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh Established in 1979 under Public Law 96-114, the Congressional Award Foundation does not receive any federal funding; all funds necessary to run the program are donations from the private sector

May 11, 2011 - Rotary club's weekly meeting

  • Club President Alan Myers has submitted two district award nominations to the District Executive Secretary for the Children Wellness Festival and the club website.
  • Our guest speaker Zeev Weksler shared his experience growing up in Israel. Thank you Zeev.




May 4, 2011 - Rotary club's weekly meeting

  • Congratulations to Will Austin for becoming a new member of the proud family of the Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary club. His father and brother Trey from the Rotary club of Warrenton, VA were present at his induction ceremony this morning.
  • Club member Chet Arnold and his wife Barbara received the Rotarian of the Month award for their coordination of the monthly First Friday Fellowship events. Congratulations to Chet and Barbara.
  • Martin ChevroletWe would like to thank our guest speaker John Martin from Dudley Martin Chevrolet Inc, Manassas, VA and his panel (our club members Amelia and Bryan) for sharing their knowledge on credit reports. John is also the current 2010-2011 Manassas Rotary Club President.
