June 18, 2011 - Stop Hunger Now! Meal Packaging Program
Members and relatives of the Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary Club, of the Battlefield High School Interact Club, and of the Church of the Word gathered together on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at the Church of the Word in Gainesville to package 20,000 meals to feed the hungry throughout the world. Service Projects Director Bill Campbell from the Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary Club teamed up with the Richmond Program Coordinator Dominic Alexander from the Stop Hunger Now organization to coordinate this fantastic event. Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief organization that coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the world.
In just over two hours the volunteers packaged over 20,000 dehydrated, high protein, and highly nutritious meals that are used in crisis situations and in school feeding programs for schools and orphanages in developing countries around the world. Volunteers were divided into groups to pour grains and dehydrated vegetables into bags, add ingredients, weight, vacuum seal, and box up the meals for transport. The volunteers took turn to bang the gong for every 1,000 meals that went through the assembly line.
All volunteers had a good time and would like to help out again. Thank you all the volunteers for coming out to help those in needs. We would like to thank Pastor Robin Adams, also a member of the Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary Club, for allowing the volunteers to use the church to package the meals. We would also like to thank Rotarian Jim Miller for buying lunch and ice cream treats for the volunteers.
