President’s Message: Patriotism and Voluntarism – Aren’t They the Same?
Lately I’ve been thinking about the relationship of these two human qualities, and I’ve decided that the two are at least close cousins. Good thing, say I. The former concerns itself with love and support of the nation; and the latter, with support of schools, churches, and society in general. Hmm, now wouldn’t those things be the fabric of a nation? This has importance for me because in my business of supporting national defense, we are asked every day to consider unthinkable consequences of possible world events. We call this threat analysis. I have come to accept that in today’s world, there are a few potential threats capable of overwhelming the social services we daily enjoy. Should any of these possibilities ever occur, we would most assuredly be winded. But after we catch our collective breath, it will be voluntarism, and the volunteers of the community, working with or without the Federal government, that in the end will operate to sustain the fabric of our society.
One of the reasons I have come to cherish my involvement in Rotary is that I see the organization as a celebration of all that is good about our nation. For me, there’s an inherent patriotism in Rotary, and voluntarism is the engine that drives it. As we rise to recite our Pledge of Allegiance this week, take pride, my fellow patriots, that your voluntarism is more than the application of occasional charity. It and you are a vital, and I believe necessary, sustaining force in our very culture.
GH-Rotary Members attend Leadership Training!
Several members of our club attended the District 7610 Club Leadership Training Seminar last Saturday. In attendance were Charlie Mills, Dave Crandall, Ali Syed, Bryan Garcia, Marilyn Karp, Amelia Stansell, Taras Raggio, and Lori Power. We all learned a lot, but as you can see from the picture above, we had a lot of fun and fellowship throughout the day.
TODAY'S PROGRAM
Jan Nelson, National Wildlife FederationThis Global Warming presentation is prepared for Virginia residents, whether they are gardeners, hunters or anglers. It covers the science of Global Warming, some of the impacts, and finally some solutions that everyone can follow. National Wildlife Federation's vision is to conserve wildlife for our children's future.
Jan Nelsen is a project manager in the education department of the National Wildlife Federation. Jan develops training for educational outreach programs and builds content for NWF web projects, specifically for the new Eco-schools USA, Climate Classroom, Hunter/Angler Global Warming state by state, and Gardener's Global Warming education. Past experience include years of government and commercial service as a project manager, helping to bring the education and technology entities moving together toward a common goal.
LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM
CURT AND MARGARET DIERDORFF, Volunteer Chaplains
Curt and Margaret are engaged in a number of volunteer opportunities including the Industrial Commercial Ministries (ICM) chaplain program. They both serve as chaplains at the Gainesville Health and Rehab Center where they have been since the facility first opened. Both Curt and Margaret are members of the ICM National Board. In addition, Curt is presently involved with chaplain work at Dulles Airport where he is working with the Assistant Fire Chief to establish a chaplain program for the firefighters. They are both active in a Christian weekend retreat weekend called The Walk to Emmaus and have served in leadership positions with that organization.
Curt and Margaret explained the Industrial Commercial Ministries (ICM) chaplain program and how they came to be involved in it. They explained that they are there primarily for the employees but by default get involved in the lives of the patients at the Gainesville Health and Rehab Center as well. They told us a little bit about the qualifications that they look for in a person who wishes to volunteer as a chaplain.

Excellence is the result of:
- caring more than others think wise
- risking more than others think is safe
