THANK YOU FELLOW ROTARIANS FROM THE EARTH DAY TEAM

The Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary Club really displayed it's stuff this past Saturday at the Earth Day Celebration in Haymarket. Thanks to everyone for your support both physical and financial, for giving us a huge presence and for making this a event a great success. Thank you for helping with the parade, recycling, chalk, selling food, pulling pork, putting up tents, taking down tents, putting out signs picking up signs, manning the information booth and giving out the toys to the treasure hunt participants and all the other things you did. David thank you for bringing us the Shriner cars and the clowns. Wherever you looked there were Rotarians. It was awesome.

There can be no doubt that the Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary Club is a leader in this community and we've raised several thousand dollars for the Gainesville-Haymarket Foundation.

When the Manassas Chorale (Charlie Miles and Mark Cooke included) sang the National anthem in front of the Rotary Booth it brought tears to my eyes. So once again. Thank you, thank you!!!!

President’s Message: How Do You Know You’re in America?

I know what tells me. The sky’s clear and blue, the sun’s bright and hot. The local police are present, quiet, and both respectful and respected. The Mayor in her blue jeans smiles a greeting. Our Congressman stops by, and talks to me like he was a neighbor.

We erect a tent for an afternoon outing, but this one’s downtown. Under it, our coffee is donated by a Rotarian from Pakistan. In the tent, our fellow Rotarians include Club members from Ireland and South Africa. Next to the Girl Scouts across the street, our Battlefield High School Interact Club, predominantly natives of Korea, sell home-made birdhouses to benefit the children of Romania. We breakfast at the Masonic Lodge, and watch the World’s Shortest Parade – two blocks of clowns, balloons, and beautiful children. Families pass by, laughing.

In and out of our tent move the heroes, the quiet planners of the day: the all-night pork-pullers; sign-makers; street-markers; treasure-hunt designers; event coordinators; food servers; booth-sitters; and banner-hangers. Around us move our head facilitator and our all-day photographer. Working side-by-side with us are the Shriners, the local Women’s Club, and our own Rotary Community Corps. Together, this group performs a thousand kindnesses, all unbidden. The Manassas Community Chorale sings the most beautiful version of The Star Spangled Banner that I’ve ever heard. It’s Earth Day in Haymarket, Virginia. This is America, land that I love.

LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM

Michael Kieffer, Bull Run Mountain Conservancy

Bull Run Mountains Conservancy, Inc., (BRMC) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1995 to protect the Bull Run Mountains through education, research, and stewardship. As the most easterly chain in the Piedmont, the Bull Run Mountains protect unique ecosystems and headwaters of the Occoquan and Goose Creek watersheds. The Bull Run Mountains are also rich in Virginia and Civil War history. BRMC is headquartered on the southern 800 acres of the 2,500-acre Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve just 15 minutes from Manassas, Middleburg, and Warrenton, Virginia.

BRMC offers educational programs to adults and children, a strong link to local history, and the simple pleasure of preserving and walking trails in the Piedmont. At BRMC preservation does not mean a hands-off policy, but rather a focus on drawing people to appreciate the resources at hand and the completion of research to better understand and protect those resources.

Our Youth Outdoors Program shows children that the outdoors is fun and exciting, and teaches them that we all have a responsibility to protect and to enhance our public lands and nature preserves. Through a series of seasonal events, nature camps, birthday adventures, and school and scout programs, we work with children rain or shine. This year, BRMC partnered with Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) to create a Youth Outdoors Scholarship Program to make these exceptional outdoor experiences available to more youth.

Rotary Members Attend Memorial Garden Dedication Ceremony for Alexis Glover.

Several of our chapter members attended the Planting and Dedication of a memorial garden for PACE West Student Alexis Glover, who was murdered earlier in the year. Our Rotary Club purchased a tree for the garden with funds collected at Happy Talk a few weeks ago. It was a very touching ceremony for a life that was tragically cut short.

GH-Rotary Welcomes Guests at our Weekly Meetings.

We have had record numbers of guests attending our recent Rotary Meetings. Pictured here are our guests attending the April 22 meeting. Many of them are in the process of becoming members of our chapter!

Please invite someone you know who might be interested in learning more about Rotary to join us at one of our breakfast meetings.
