LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM
Earth Day, Every Day, presented by the Earth Day Committee
The
Earth Day Celebration in Haymarket on Saturday, April 25th from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm is focused on children. They are our future and we owe it them to make Earth Day happen every day. The day’s highlight is the
Children’s Parade starting at 10:00 at Madison and Washington Streets. Children may wear home-made costumes, carry art work, decorate bicycles or wagons. Flyers have been set to Pre-K through 5th grade Public and private schools within the boundaries of Haymarket. Prizes will be awarded based on originality, enthusiasm, environmental or recycling themes.
Another focus on children is the
Middle School Essay Contest with a $100 first prize sponsored by the Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary Club. The essay will be titled What I Can Do Every Day To Promote a Cleaner Environment.
We’re thrilled to report that the
Battlefield High School Interact Club will have a booth and activity for children. They’ll be raising funds for an International project they are undertaking.
The club will be selling food at our booth. Mark Cooke is leading this part of the effort. We’ve already raised over $1700 and we expect the event is going to turn out to be a nice fund raiser. All proceeds are going to the Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary Foundation.
A long stretch of Washington Street will be closed from 8:00 to 4:00. They’ll be parking in various locations, just look for the signs. Come early and have
breakfast with the Haymarket Woman’s Club at the Mason’s lodge on Jefferson Street. They’ll start serving at 7:00 am. The
Town Beautification starts at 8:00 and volunteers should gather at the old town hall at 15000 Washington Street.
Stop by the
Kids Fun Activity Corner and enjoy arts and crafts and games. Bring your bike to the
Bike Rodeo hosted by the Haymarket Police Department where you can get you bike inspected and run an obstacle course. Much fun is to be had by going on the
Treasure Hunt that starts at BB&T. Clues that will take you throughout Haymarket. Be sure and catch wonderful live performances on our stage.
Other environmental awareness activities include a
Recycling Fair for electronics and shredding for personal papers. Don’t miss the exciting
Green Car Show where you’ll be able to see the latest environmentally friendly cars.
Each hour we’ll present an
Earth Day Workshop. Washington St. will be lined with vendors booths full of environmentally friendly products and lots of environmental literature.
This event is being produced by the Town of Haymarket and the Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary Club of Virginia. For more information please visit the Earth Day in Haymarket website
by clicking here. Vendor booths and sponsorships are still available. You can download the forms from our website.
A lot of people in this community are working very hard to make this a special Earth Day Celebration in Haymarket. Save the date! Saturday, April 25th 2009.
As you can see this is a big event and we are going to need everyone to help us both get ready and on the day of the event. This is a high visibility event in the community. Remember to bring your Rotary magazines. We will have sign-up sheets for:
Volunteers to serve food at our booth
Volunteers to man the booth – we are the last stop on the treasure hunt and we need people to talk about Rotary to potential new members
Volunteers for the parade 9:30 – 11:00
Volunteers for Haymarket Beautification 8: - 10
Volunteers for Electronics Recycling 9 - 3
Volunteers to answer questions about where things are 8 - 4
Volunteers to monitor the event to ensure refuse bins are usable 8 – 4
We working on getting other volunteers but this is our event and people should see us everywhere in our hats and shirts. Ask you spouses, children, friends, neighbors to help.

Excellence is the result of:
- caring more than others think wise
- risking more than others think is safe
- dreaming more than others think is practical
- and expecting more than others think is possible
