President’s Message: Water, Water, Everywhere…
I was a chemical engineering student in college. One of my professors admonished us saying that in spite of our dreams of being high-paid systems designers, 60% percent of the class would, of necessity, be working in careers associated with the provision of fresh water. That was 1972. Today’s Rotary World Understanding thoughts – inspired by my esteemed Professor Fenske - are about water.
Our Earth has life because of water, but 97.5% of the Earth’s water is … saltwater. Only 2.5% of it is fresh. Within that 2.5% on which Earth’s land-life depends, 70% is captive in the great polar ice caps and in snow. Thirty percent of the fresh is in groundwater, and about 0.3%, a mere fraction, exists in lakes and rivers. Less than 1% of all surface and groundwater is drinkable without treatment – this is where Professor Fenske was coming from. Since it takes 2000-5000 liters of water to produce one person’s daily food, humanity has a reliance on rainfall. Flood and drought further upset this delicate balance. In many regions of the world, South America for example, much of the fresh water (in fact, 70% in S.A.) is used for agriculture, to grow food … but much of the food, when it comes, is used for fuel.
Today, I’m thankful that I have both food and fuel … and most of all, water. The older I get, the smarter Professor Fenske was.
TODAY'S PROGRAM
Cindy Seidel officially began her career in fitness in 1985. Unofficially she doesn’t remember a time in her life without exercise. With a father who was a PE teacher and coach, she learned to do full body push ups during commercials while watching TV. She also danced until the age of 21 in dance companies, troupes, in summer stock musicals, dinner theatre and as a dance major at Southern Methodist University.
In her fitness career Cindy has held the position of an aerobics insturctor both in Dallas, TX and all over Northern virginia. She has taught Master Classes in Virginia, South Carolina, and California. She has held positions of Aerobic Director, Assistant Group Fitness Coordinator, and Fitness Manager in area fitness facilities. She also taught classes for personal trainers in Anatomy/Physiology, Kinesiology, and Sales for Washington Sports Clubs and NSPA. For the last three years, in addition to personal training, Cindy has been the Training and Conditioning Coach for the WTW Woodson High School Crew Team.
Cindy started personal training after the birth of her first child 18 years ago and is currently certified through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM – CFI) and National Sports Professionals Association (NSPA – CCS), and in Pilates.
Cindy’s training philosophy is one of encouraging a life change with her clients. She believes that once fitness and good nutrition have become a part of a person’s daily routine, not only will the results last a life time, but the benefits of feeling great and looking great can never be replaced. Cindy takes her job seriously with hard work and consistency being a major focius in her clients’ training programs. However, to quote Cindy: “If you are going to work hard, you might as well have fun while you are doing it! We laugh a lot every session!”
LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM
Bennie Bough, Shriners International.
Benny spoke and gave us a multimedia presentation about the work of the Shriners and their mission. Shriners Hospital for Children is a network of twenty-two pediatric specialty hospitals, operated and maintained by the Shrine, where children under 18 receive expert medical care absolutely free of charge, regardless of their race, religion or relationship to the Shriner. Bennie recounted some of his personal experiences related to transporting sick children and their families to the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital for treatment. His presentation was both enlightening and inspiring.
GH-Rotary Welcomes Guests at our Weekly Meetings.
We had three guests attend our meeting last week. Hopefully we will be seeing more of them and maybe even welcome them as members in the near future! Pictured above is member Dave Salmon with his guest Jim Aram, from Advantage Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, LLC. Pictured below is member Linda Marlow with her two guests, Dr. Evelyn Poku-Kwateng (left), who recently opened her new dental office in Bristow, and Dr. Marwa Abdelfattah (right) of Fauquier Health Internal Medicine in Gainesville. All members are encouraged to invite guests who may be interested in finding out more about Rotary and it's mission.
Rotary Foundation Giving Update
We did it! We made out monetary goal of $3300 raised for the current Rotary Year! Congratulations to everyone but especially to Russ Tuck for leading our efforts in Rotary Foundation Giving.
Our goal is EVERY MEMBER EVERY YEAR. FAIR We hope that every member will make some contribution to the Rotary Foundation this year. Perhaps you can join this group with a ten or twenty dollar gift.
There is still district money available - Rotary district will still match each gift for $100 or more.
Bring checks to Russell Tuck

Excellence is the result of:
- caring more than others think wise
- risking more than others think is safe
- dreaming more than others think is practical
- and expecting more than others think is possible
