President’s Message: Boosting Rotary Awareness…

After our last weekly meeting, Linda Marlow, Don Rusch and I visited the Third Grade at Pace West School. We were greeted by Kecia Wolf who, remember, has spoken to our Club. We met teacher Mary-Alice and her five – we can be hopeful – future Rotarians, including Ty and “Steven-but-not-with-a-P-H.” We also met Lex their Therapy Dog, an Irish Setter. Although the school was in mourning for the recently-murdered 13-year-old girl we all saw in the news, the cold weather had elevated the mood in this classroom and the students were hoping for snow. Their strategy, they said, was to wear their pajamas inside-out.

I had my lapel pin on my jacket and they wanted to know what it was. So I told a story about Rotary. Then we talked about dictionaries and presented one to each child. When we opened the front cover, Steven-but-not-with-a-P-H saw the emblem on the salutation sticker, and said, “Hey, that’s what you’re wearing!” And then he told us what it was and what it meant. Instant Rotary awareness. It was a rich and rewarding experience, and I was proud to represent you, dear Club. A small but significant victory of the kind that works change in people’s lives. Who knows, maybe we changed the world!

TODAY'S PROGRAM

Cheri Villa, President and CEO - SERVE

Cheri Villa, the current President/CEO of SERVE, will be addressing the unique ways SERVE is delivering client services in this challenging economic environment. As a point of interest, close to 20% of SERVE’s budget came from Fannie & Freddie (this source of funds is seriously in doubt in the future), and Prince William County is considering zero funding us for the upcoming fiscal year. It should be an enlightening discussion. Rob Sturm, the current Chair of the Board, will also be attending with Cheri.

LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM

Explanation of Reverse Raffle by Manassas Rotary Members

Two Manassas Rotary Members were guests at our meeting and told us about their upcoming event - a Reverse Raffle taking place this weekend. They explained the logistics involved in running the event and their anticipated profit. Several members of our club will be attending so we can expect to hear more feedback in the near future.
