President’s Message: Champions Walk Among us…
Peggy and I attended the Rose Bowl and watched real champions play. As a Penn State alumnus, I was particularly impressed by PSU coach Joe Paterno’s refusal to make the Bowl a game about him. He flat ignored the press’ desire to do so. Joe has long been one of my champions for his belief in his team, his program, and yes, in himself. Often, real champions can be found operating out of the spotlight and behind the scenes in unassuming but important ways. That was Rose Bowl Joe – he never left the press-box. Joe’s quiet toughness, loyalty to his school, and paternal love for his Nittany Lions is bigger than life.
Rotary has such champions, too. Today I am thinking of one of them, right here in the Gainesville-Haymarket Club. Like many champions, he is a person of quiet strength and mountainous compassion. As a person, he is loyal, unassuming, patriotic, and uncomplicated. As a Rotarian, he has given freely and significantly, each year gifting us with a major event for which he asks no recognition. In fact, he eschews recognition of any kind, perhaps believing that spotlighting the needs of the community is not served by obstructing the light. Like Joe, he has my deepest respect. And this year, in his quiet way, he reminds us … a father’s love is forever. Thanks, Champion.

LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM
Fundraising OptionsEd Wilbourn briefed the group on the Texas Hold-em option as a fundraiser for our group. He outlined the logistics of how the event is run and the different opportunities for raising money during the course of the event. Piedmont Club has offered us complimentary use of the ballroom for this event. There are a number of card clubs in the area to draw participants from. Nicole Negvesky volunteered to work on the publicity for the event. The membership voted to go forward with this fundraising option sometime in the early spring.
Charlie Mills briefed the group on the option to have a reverse raffle event. The group decided to investigate this option further and may go forward with it as a second fundraising option later in the year.
