We celebrate Veteran’s Day this week. It’s impossible for me to think about Service Above Self without thinking about veterans of military service, especially those with whom I have emotional bonds. It is also difficult to describe for non-military colleagues – as I want to do so much - how military service writes the imperative sentences into a veteran’s life-script. There is no other experience like it.
Perhaps like you, I have traced my lineage and it includes many who served. Close family further swells their ranks. This week as we call the roll, I remember:
(4th Great Grandfather) Moses Fargo, Montville, CT – mustering Sergeant, 4th Company (Captain Coit), 6th Regiment (Colonel Parsons), Revolutionary War, 1775 – served at Bunker Hill
(Great Grandfather-in-Law) Louis Johnson, Monroe, WI - Bugler, Civil War, 1863-1865
(Great Grandfather) Timothy Lynch, Erie, PA – Private, Company F (Captain Read), 11th U.S. Infantry, Indian Wars, 1878-1881 – served at Ft. Laramie
(Great Uncle) Otto Wilhelm, Erie, PA - Regimental Sergeant-Major, 112th Infantry, WWI, 1915-1918 – gassed in France
(Uncle) Harold Calbert, Erie, PA – Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Infantry, WWII, 1943-1945 – mortared in Italy
(Uncle) Richard Fargo, Erie, PA – Sergeant, U.S. Infantry, WWII, 1942-1945 – malaria in the Philippine Island Campaign
(Uncle) Harold Fargo, Erie, PA – Sergeant, U.S. Infantry, WWII, 1942-1945 – Aleutians Campaign
(Father) Kenneth Fargo, Erie, PA – Captain, First U.S. Army Air Force, WWII, 1942-1945 – slated for Operation Olympic invasion of Japan
(Brother) Brian Fargo, Erie, PA – Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, Vietnam, 1963-1965 – only living veteran on my list Thank you for your service. I will always remember you. In my mind’s eye, I still see all of you in rank and file, smartly turned out. Ready to serve. And I salute you. LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM Nicole Negvesky, Classification Talk
Nicole gave us insight into how she got involved in employee benefits and into her family life - she is the very proud mother of 3 young children. She is an active volunteer in her church and became interested in joining Rotary because of her father and her uncle, both active Rotary members themselves. Her uncle attended our meeting to support her last week and presented our club with a $500 check to the Rotary Foundation in Nicole's name! With the matching funds available in our district, this makes Nicole eligable to become a Paul Harris Fellow. Congratulations Nicole!
Rotary Foundation Giving Update
IMPORTANT Rotary District 7610 has received a contribution that will be used to match member contributions (minimum of $100.00) that are made to the Rotary Foundation. This means that your gift can be matched dollar for dollar until the gift money has all been spent. There is reason to believe that the matching money will all be spent very soon. One member of our club has applied to have a $500.00 contribution matched and the total $1000.00 contribution which will result in a Paul Harris Fellow Award. This was sent in immediately and we hope that it is received before the matching money is all spent. Strong suggestion---If you plan to make a Rotary Foundation gift, do it now. I will receive checks and mail them to the Rotary Foundation immediately and hope that they will be matched. All contributions apply toward the Paul Harris Fellow award or the next highest award. Excellence is the result of:
- caring more than others think wise
- risking more than others think is safe
- dreaming more than others think is practical
