President’s Message: On Leading in Hard Times

Anybody can run an empty calendar. More uncertain times require more, even extraordinary leadership. That’s where you come in, my friends. You are the extraordinary leaders of our community. We in Rotary should recognize and assume this mantle, because certainly, those who would do our country harm have historically recognized us as leaders. Even despots have.

Want proof? My WWII-veteran uncle left me the book, History of World War II, by Francis Trevelyan Miller, published 1945. It has captured the details of the country-by-country imposition of the Reich during Hitler’s systematic destruction of Europe. It turns out Hitler did this by targeting, well…you. That’s right, Rotarian.

Author Miller explains that the process of Aryanization included the sale of non-Aryan property, businesses, and other sources of income exclusively to Germans at a fraction of their value and under the protection of the Gestapo. We know that this process was suffered of course most egregiously by Jewish citizens, but Miller adds the following historical footnote:

“Aryanization was extended beyond Jews to Rotarians, Masons, and Benes sympathizers.”

Hitler knew that he had to destroy Rotarians in order to destroy the fabric of Europe. As we celebrate our freedom of choice in the coming weeks, never question that your participation and your leadership matter. Today’s hard times will pass, and it will be your leadership that will ultimately carry the day.

TODAY'S PROGRAM

Kecia Wolf, PACE West

Kecia Wolf has been working with children with special needs for 15 years now. She has been at PACE as a Social Worker and Special Education teacher for the last 5 years. Her role is to counsel and teach students from 1st grade thru 12th grade. All of these students have very unique circumstances that have prevented them from being successful at their base school and they need a small, highly intensive therapeutic setting in order to be successful.

LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM

Joe D'Andrea - Classification Talk

Joe is Army Veteran who earned 3 Battle Stars while serving his country in World War II. He enlisted at the age of 18 and refused to go to OCS school because he would not leave his buddies. After being assigned to the Ordinance Department, he eventually found himself on a ship headed to Africa and went on to serve in 8 different countries. Joe joined Rotary in the 90's where he resided in New York and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow for bringing in 24 new Rotary Members in just 14 months. He currently has a consulting business with over 2,000 clients. Joe and his wife are looking forward to spending the winter months at their second home in Florida, where Joe plans to act as an ambassador for our club as a visiting Rotarian.
