October is Vocational Service Month, but under the circumstances I think we can be permitted a brief look back into September. Thanks to you, our Children’s Wellness Festival was a triumph of vocational service. Nothing less. Thank you BIG, BIG to the over 50% of the membership who were able to directly support this event. Gainesville-Haymarket volunteers significantly out-numbered others. I can’t wait to share further behind-the-scenes Personal Eyewitness Accounts with all of you. Here are some of mine, performed by blue-and-red-shirted Rotary volunteers:

• Bringing balloons and smiles to overwhelmemoms with crying kids
• Arranging for the Potomac Nationals mascot to take a break outside so a terrified 5-year-old could enter the screening area with his mother;
• Red-shirted Metz students keeping spills cleaned up as the day progressed;
• Incredible professionalism by the medical screeners;
• Incredible patience and physical stamina by volunteers who started early, stayed late, and stood on their feet the whole time.

The CWF was about fairness, good will and better friendships, and the public good.

It was a poster-event for Rotary service. Well-done, volunteer heroes. You make a difference in our world.

Club Assembly & Fundraising Brainstorming Session

Today the Board will give an update on the state of the club. In addition, we will brainstorm about ideas for fundraising.

Bryan Garcia gave his classification talk. He told us about his international adventures as a child, spending the first 11 years of his life overseas. He learned to dive at a very young age in Sri Lanka. Eventually his family settled in Haymarket when he was a teenager, back when Haymarket really was ""the middle of nowhere". College took him south, where he worked in the restaurant field and met his wife, before returning to Haymarket, where he currently works in real estate . Bryan and his wife are expecting their second child to be born today!

Sustaining members for 2008-2009 will receive current Badge Tags to indicate their status. Bring your check and be included in this group.

There are now ten sustaining members for 2008-2009 and our goal is Every Member Every Year.

Contributions to the Rotary Foundation drive our Rotary health and education projects in America and around the world. Also, fifty per cent of the money remains in our district and is available to our club through grants to fund our local projects.

Flash: One new Paul Harris Fellow is emerging from our membership. One or two others are giving serious consideration to the idea. Money donated as Sustaining members accumulates toward Paul Harris Fellow status.
