President’s Message: What Compels Us?

My mother died a year ago this week. Her greatest legacy to her children was her compassion. She taught by her deeds that the strength and nobility in any family can be measured by its extension of love and care to those in need. Her most urgent care was offered internal to the family, of course, but her greatest lesson was about caring for extended family, too – for parents, siblings, friends, and neighbors. Her compassion was diffused like ripples on the surface of a pond, and was almost as visible. It mattered. It shaped me.

I believe this is a shared family experience for most of us: listen to Robin speak about his mother, or to Alan speak about his father. They beckoned their children to a life in service to others. If we were to diagram the overlapping circles of care offered to our respective, extended families, I believe we’d find they make a big honeycomb pattern. This is what draws us to Rotary. Sharing our compassion is a natural, necessary, and rewarding human behavior. Rotary allows our compassion to play in a larger pond. In a way, we in Rotary are all bee-keepers to the big honeycomb that is the Family of Man.

Thanks mom. Thanks, Rotary.

Scenes from Haymarket Day, Saturday, September 20th, 2008

What a wonderful experience! Small town America at its finest. Flags, fun, food, and festival! Thanks so much to all of you who gave your time, talent, and treasure to this event: to parade marshals, traffic directors, booth keepers, membership solicitors, and advice-givers. A special tip of my hat to Nicole for organizing and for providing furniture, to Ali for the generous donation of coffee and fixings, to Thea for the beautiful raffled pearls, and to Don for providing cookies! Great job, everyone! You make me proud to be a Rotarian and a small part of you, because you embody the finest qualities of citizenship.

You are the Key, Dennis.
