President’s Message: Anatomy of a Project
Early one morning this week a thunderstorm stomped me into consciousness. I love Eastern thunderstorms. They have a life not unlike a Rotary project. I reclosed my eyes and drank the sound. First, wind pushing the house to its own creaky wakefulness as the front moves in, Are you there can you help? Lightning: giant flashlights scouting the landscape, What needs to be done? Thunder like the moving of heavy furniture upstairs, increasing as more unseen hands are applied to the doing. Where I live, thunder echoes down the Blue Ridge from Warrenton to Culpepper - the heavenly harmonics of Clubs joining in? Then, rain and productivity. Down-pour. And the aftermath: downspouts noisily slaking their thirst; the land sighing its satisfaction, at least for a time; trees - and people - exhausted from the effort. Done-in-a-Day.

To work with others. To fill a need. To know the community has a bit more integrity today because I was there. To celebrate use of my body, my brain, and my resources while I still can. These are the gifts returned. I love Rotary projects.

LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM

Visit from District Governor Chuck Davidson

District Governor Chuck Davidson and his wife Nita visited our Rotary Club last week, along with AG Dave Mercer. Chuck spoke highly of our club and then proceeded to give an interesting presentation on the “Ingredients of a Great Rotary Club”. According to Chuck, the ingredients of a great Rotary Club are:

1. Rotarians – the quality of the membership is a more important factor than the quantity, but we still must continue to grow.

2. Service to Others – all of the service projects we participate in help to define our club and it’s commitment to “Service Above Self”.

3. Financial Resources – we need to support the Foundation through fundraisers and bringing in new members.

4. Community Recognition – through public relations we need to make the local community aware of our involvement in the community and what Rotary stands for.

Excellence is the result of:
  • caring more than others think wise
  • risking more than others think is safe
  • dreaming more than others think is practical
  • and expecting more than others think is possible
