President's Message: Reading People
This week I was reunited with a submarine crew I hadn’t seen for forty-one years. We were tentative at first, all of us cautiously scanning the Muppety gatherers for clues to once-smooth faces. But the chemistry of time quickly dissolved in the strong alkaline of returning memory. I saw my friend, recognized him instantly, and knew that I still knew him. I knew that he was an electrician from St Louis, that he loved baseball and particularly, the Pirates; that his dislike for commuting had brought him back to the Navy; that the task he liked least as an electrician was running cables from one compartment to another; and that his favorite drink was Early Times and water. I called him by his nickname, Herbie. We spoke with our eyes and hands, our arms and our laughter, and inevitably, with our tears for lost shipmates and forty-one lost years. We told stories and relived experiences as small tribes have done for centuries. We read each other as though we were books. See, shipmates are life-mates.
I believe that Rotary offers this same kind of bonding for many. But it requires a little study. The reading of people is its own, special kind of literacy.

Club - Service Projects Message
Background
One of the ways to demonstrate service above self is to get involved with our community service projects. These projects belong to each of us. We make them successful.
The
Children's Wellness Festival is our signature health project and happens on
. The event provides health screening and education. Through this project we become a source for children who will not get the medical attention they need because they have exhausted all possible avenues of support. The Senator Colgan and Accomplished under 40 Fund Raiser is being undertaken to raise the funds to provide health care to these at risk children. We have lots of projects on our plates and we should focus on the ones that are just around the corner. On Saturday September 20th the Town of Haymarket holds the biggest event of the year. It is called Haymarket Day. Here's what's involved:Volunteer to help with the parade. Last year Charlie, Dennis, Marilyn and kids from the Interact Club helped organized the groups in the parade and then when told helped the groups flow into the parade. We started around 8 and the paradae ended at about 11. Have the club purchase a booth for the event. (Cost is $150). We did this our part of our PR compaign to be known in the community and as a membership drive. We found Thea Taylor and she found us at this event. Last year we sold coffee and donunts and raised enough money to pay for the booth and then some. This brings up an important point. Our projects should be self funding whenever possible. Here if a preliminary task list for Haymarket Day project
Establish the committee including a Chairperson. Marilyn as the Service Director will help the chairperson if they feel they need it
Purchase booth from the Town of Haymarket
Get volunteers to set up booth
Get volunteers to man the booth in 2 hour shifts
Orangize literature to be handed out at the booth
Determine what to sell at the booth
Arrange to acquire what will be sold - this could be raffle tickets or whatever the committee comes up with
Determine how to allocate any funds raised that go beyond the cost of the booth
Organize volunteers to help with the parade.
We're looking for people to manage the event and then people to volunteer to be part of the event. Let Marilyn Karp know if you are interested.

Places to make up a meeting
Excellence is the result of:
- caring more than others think wise
- risking more than others think is safe
- dreaming more than others think is practical
- and expecting more than others think is possible
