April 27, 2012 - Battlefield High School 2012 Talent Show

On Friday, April 27th, the Battlefield High School held its 2012 BHS Talent Show from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the BHS auditorium to raise money to help build a school in Sierra Leone through the Brick by Brick Schoolbuilding campaign managed by the Free the Children Organization. This fundraiser was hosted by the students from the BHS Interact club and the BHS Key club to raise awareness and money to build a school in one of the poorest countries in the world, Sierra Leone. The BHS Interact club is one of the Rotary International's service clubs for young people ages 12 to 18. The BHS Key club is a high school organization sponsored by Kiwanis International.

Months before this talent show night the students from the two clubs worked tireless to plan and organize this charity event. It started out with Ha Young Shin, President of the BHS Interact club, wanted to make her dream of helping those children who have no access to education a reality. Ha Young wishes that these children be given valuable skills enabling them to earn a better living and ultimately break the cycle of poverty in those areas. Ha Young and Angela Cho, President of the BHS Key club, led the operation with strong support from Mr. Cruz, (Interact club instructor) and Ms. Starkey (Key club instructor). Both clubs received an outpouring of support from Principal Mrs. Amy Ethridge-Conti and the rest of the school staff.

At 6:00 PM guests started to arrive at the school where they were greeted by the students from the Interact and Key clubs and by the Rotarians from the Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary club. Rotarians helped out with the concession tables, photography, and the raffle tickets for the wonderful prizes donated by the local sponsors. At 7:00 PM the show opened with both Ha Young and Angela singing the "Fly Me to the Moon" song. Afterward Ha Young and Angela took turn introducing each act and the performers by name. Students and Mr. Ross Bair, science teacher at BHS, showcased their talents including singing, dancing, poetry, and music. At the end of the show students raised over $1,000 and 100% of the proceeds go to build a school in Sierra Leone (West African nation).
